Our Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

At Sheltr Canada, we recognize that our journey toward Truth and Reconciliation is still in its early stages, but we are committed to taking meaningful steps forward. We acknowledge our responsibility to advance Truth and Reconciliation within our organization and communities. Our Land Acknowledgement reminds us that the land we live and work on was originally stewarded by Indigenous Peoples, and that historical injustices, including those tied to colonial and faith-based systems, have had lasting impacts.

In 2021, Sheltr Canada began by formally acknowledging the territories we operate on. In 2022, we launched a Mission-wide Book Club focused on “21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act”, inviting Indigenous leaders and community members to guide our learning. Through their personal stories and insights, we gained a deeper understanding of the systemic effects of colonialism, the challenges faced by Indigenous communities, and the knowledge and culture that has been lost.

Most recently, our Truth and Reconciliation Committee developed a Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan, which serves as a roadmap for continued learning, awareness, and tangible steps toward equity, respect, and partnership with Indigenous communities.
