History

Sheltr Canada’s roots are inspired by a simple yet powerful belief — that every person deserves a safe place to call home and the opportunity to rebuild their life with dignity.

In our early days, a compassionate Canadian farmer opened his home to help a young man struggling with homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges. This act of kindness planted the seed for what would grow into a safe haven for many in need. With the support of caring volunteers and local communities, a modest building was transformed into a shelter where individuals could find warmth, nourishment, and hope.
Over time, our mission expanded. We opened spaces to support women and children escaping violence, offering them safety, counselling, and the resources to start anew. From there, Sheltr Canada continued to grow, introducing programs for youth, families, and individuals — from nutritious meal programs to housing support and addiction recovery services.
For decades, our staff, volunteers, and donors have worked side-by-side to break cycles of homelessness, poverty, and abuse. Together, we have built a community rooted in compassion, resilience, and the belief that change is possible for everyone.
